No Peace, No Purchase

Are you a sucker for clever marketing?

Have you ever felt an urgent tug to buy something right after watching an advertisement? Advertisers are experts at creating a sense of need and urgency. They offer an endless parade of “once-in-a-lifetime” deals. The pitch is normally to convince you that you’d better buy now because prices may never be this low again. Even if you’re seeking to be a good steward of God’s resources, you may be tempted by some of these deals from time to time. The key is to be patient, operate with a plan and never jump when making a financial decision. If you don’t have peace, don’t buy. If a quick decision is required, don’t get involved. Even if you have a legitimate need, take the time to think and pray about a prospective purchase, because God may have an alternative means of providing for you. My wife, Ann, and I experienced this last month. We needed some chairs but retail prices were discouraging. So, we went to Facebook Marketplace.  After weeks of looking there, a deal finally surfaced and the transaction blessed both buyer and seller.

Sometimes, decisions made in the spur of the moment can lead to regrets. Resolve not to make buying decisions under pressure. Waiting before you buy may cost you a few good deals, but that’s a small loss compared to freedom from stress and anxiety. The Apostle Paul said, “Don’t be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” ( Philippians 4:6-7)
