Pride
Do you like solving riddles?
Years ago, a young boy challenged me with this riddle: “What can you swallow that can also swallow you?” Well the answer’s found in the Bible: PRIDE. Pride is a spiritual stronghold; a tool of the enemy to set itself up against the knowledge of God. Psalm 25:9 says that God promises to lead the humble in what is right, and to teach them his way. To protect ourselves from pride and bad financial decisions, we must seek humility and be grounded in Biblical truth. Pride causes us to overspend. This happens when we buy things to impress others or to maintain a certain social status. Proverbs 16:18 says, “pride comes before a fall.” Godly stewards live and look differently from others. Pray about your purchasing habits. Are you honoring God or seeking to maintain your status?
Pride causes us to covet. Pride that takes root in the heart, finances, and relationships causes a competitive mindset. You constantly compare yourself to others. This breeds anxiety, discontentment and covetousness. Romans 12:3 says, “do not think more highly of yourself than you ought.” Instead, think of yourself and others the way God does. Pride can prevent us from seeking help. Admitting you need support or guidance requires a lot of humility, but it’s a wise and humble step to take. James 4:10 reminds us that God uplifts the humble. Pride can lead to destruction. Swallow it lest it swallow you!
