Humility – The Cornerstone of Financial Wisdom

Are you humble?

Humility is the priceless cornerstone of financial wisdom. It will change the way you think about money, the way you earn money, and the way you spend money. Eliminating pride is important because God is not neutral about our pride. 1 Peter 5:5 says, “…clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'” He doesn’t just withdraw from the proud or look the other way. He actively opposes or resists those who think too highly of themselves. He stands against them. John Stott said, “Pride is your greatest enemy, humility is your greatest friend.” C.S. Lewis called it “the great sin” because it leads to every other vice. He said, “Pride is spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense.”

Pride puts you in an adversarial position with God. Impressing others may gain you some temporary notoriety, but pride is accompanied by God’s opposition and will cost you blessings not only in this world but also in the world to come. Remember you can rest in the knowledge that you have far greater rewards in heaven. Ask God to reveal pride in your life. Seek an honest assessment from loved ones or colleagues. Acknowledge the sin and repent of it. Then, study the life of Christ to learn what true humility looks like. Gaining Biblical wisdom will impact your finances in a significant way!
