Are you prepared for an economic crisis?

Our founder, Larry Burkett, wrote The Coming Economic Earthquake in 1991. He saw multiple red flags in America’s economy. Although he was careful to say that he was not a prophet, he warned of possible turmoil. Those warning signs have been evident since he first penned the book. Yet, America’s economy has shown incredible resilience. It’s expanded more than Larry may have dreamed or imagined. Through economic expansion and federal monetary policy “the big one” has been staved off longer than Larry and many other experts thought possible. In Deuteronomy 28, God gave clear economic instructions to His chosen people. Obedience promised blessings of abundance and strength. Disobedience would undo their progress. He said, “…you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow.”  He continued, “The sojourner who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall become lower and lower. He shall lend to you, and you shall not lend to him. He shall be the head and you shall be the tail.”

America was the largest creditor nation in the world in the late ‘70’s. By the mid ‘80’s we’d become the largest debtor nation in the world. Today, we face an increasing mountain of debt, a potential banking crisis, and the challenge of controlling inflation while fighting off a recession or worse. The heart of our economic problem is the heart problem of our people. Until we believe and obey God, we can’t expect to avoid an economic crisis.
