Work and Spend To Honor the Lord

Work has monetary and spiritual value.

For many, work is a necessary evil. Others seek to find their identity in it. Somehow, we’ve been duped into believing that work is a secular activity. We fail to see work as an opportunity to exercise our God-given gifts and put spiritual principles into practice. The workplace can be our greatest area of outreach and witness. Whether at home, an assembly line, or a corporate office, God’s created you to work and honor Him. Colossians 3:23-24 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

How you earn money is just as important as how you spend it. Because of the direct correlation between the two, it should make us pause and consider our purchasing decisions more seriously. Every hour of your work has monetary and spiritual value, whether it’s at home or in a career. That value should influence the way you choose to spend your money. If an item or experience isn’t worth “X” number of hours of work, then you shouldn’t buy it. That’s just simple logic. How many hours of work does a dinner at a restaurant cost you? Is that new car payment worth all the meetings you’ll have to sit through this week? What’s the trade-off for a larger mortgage payment? Does your work honor the Lord? So how about your spending?
