Labor Day

Happy Labor Day!

Today people gather across the nation to celebrate with picnics, bar-b-q’s, parades, and fireworks. It’s a day to honor the hard-working people who’ve contributed to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. Its roots go back to the late 1800’s. During the Industrial Revolution, average Americans worked 12-hour days and earned just enough money to get by. In some states, 5 and 6-year-old children worked in factories, mills, and mines. The conditions were unsafe. The hours and pay were inhumane. Finally, people had had enough. Labor unions organized strikes and rallies to protest. On September 5th, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off and marched to Union Square in New York City. They conducted what would become the first Labor Day parade in America’s history. Congress eventually took action, in an attempt to calm workers, and in 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law, making Labor Day a legal holiday. It’s observed each year on the first Monday of September.

Many get the day off, but Jesus had a better solution for those who grow weary. He says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.“ (Matthew 11:28-30) So, enjoy the day off and carry God’s rest into all your tomorrows.
