Debt-Free Christmas

Want a debt-free Christmas?

Last year, Credit Karma reported how people were unable to afford the holidays. They defined Christmas as “debt-mas.” Can you identify? Biblical financial principles are given for our good. We ignore them, then we suffer. That’s why I emphasize spending less than you earn, setting financial goals, getting on a budget, and following a plan. Celebrating Christmas without debt is a matter of stewarding your resources. Cut back on non-essentials to free up dollars now. Making sacrifices will reduce future stress. You just might find that it’s really not too painful.

Make a list of people you want to remember. Think back on previous years.  Be specific, then, add or delete as needed. Determine exactly what you can afford to spend. Last year’s bank and credit card statements may help. Include food, travel, and gifts to purchase or to make. It’s better to overestimate costs than to come up short. Copy your list and carry it with you. Paying with cash will limit credit card spending. Consider having a theme this year like “Nothing New Under the Tree,” or things that only fit in a stocking or handmade gifts. Then ask God to help you find or make gifts so you avoid any last-minute shopping frenzy. Don’t neglect how you can give your time or talent to bless others. Make your own gift cards while asking God for creativity. A calendar of community events can provide extra ideas. God will provide. Simply ask, wait patiently, and give thanks.
