Crazy Money! The “Great Kentucky Hoard”

It’s Crazy Money Day!

A man in Kentucky was digging in his cornfield when he got the surprise of his life! He unearthed 800 coins from the Civil War era worth more than 2 million dollars. That’s crazy! The gold coins dated between 1840 and 1863 have been dubbed the “Great Kentucky Hoard“. The rarest is a $20 1-ounce gold Liberty coin that could bring 6 figures at auction. The Great Kentucky Hoard contains 18 of them. Archaeologists believe that the coins were possibly buried in advance of a Confederate army raid in 1863. Supposedly, many wealthy Kentuckians buried large sums of money at that time.

Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” (Matthew 13:44) He also said, “Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6: 19-21)

So where’s your treasure? Is it in banks, the stock market, real estate? Moses “regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.” (Hebrews 11:26) If you believe in Christ, you’re guaranteed a priceless inheritance. Eternal life is of greater value than any hoard of gold coins.
