Paul’s Guidelines for Giving

Do you give with intentionality?

In 2000, Ann and I graduated from a Crown Small Group Study. She was determined that we would begin giving a minimum of 10% of our gross annual income to God’s causes. Now I thought we needed a decade to adjust our budget for such a dramatic change. We had to adapt to a different lifestyle to be able to afford it. It was tough, but we did it. The Apostle Paul instructed the Corinthians saying, “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come, no collections will have to be made.” (1 Corinthians 16:2)

We can take several lessons from this passage: Giving should be regular. Paul said, “…on the first day of every week.” Not in a spontaneous or emotionally driven manner, but with intentionality. Giving should be personal. Paul said, “Each one of you should…” It’s the responsibility and privilege of every child of God to give. He wants us all to enjoy the blessings of generosity. Billy Graham said, “God has given us two hands, one to receive and the other to give.” Giving should be out of a private deposit. Paul said to “set aside a sum of money.” Too often, we set aside money for emergencies, retirement, or investment, but don’t have funds that are for giving only. This means you save for this purpose. I challenge you to try giving intentionally. Make a decision to do it, save for it, and then go for it! See what happens! My guess is you will be joyfully surprised!
