It’s Crazy Money Day!

In 1988, “Bud” Post won $16 million in the Pennsylvania lottery. Within 1 year, he was a million dollars in debt and wished he had never won. Now that’s crazy! His life became a nightmare. His brother hired a hitman to kill him for an inheritance and a girlfriend sued him for a third of his winnings. Post said he was happier when he was broke. He eventually spent time in jail for firing a gun over the head of a bill collector. After serving time, he lived quietly until his death in 2006 on $450 a month and food stamps.

Many people dream of winning the lottery. The truth is, about a third of the winners go bankrupt. They don’t understand complicated tax obligations and few seek professional wealth advisors. Most haven’t been faithful with little and when suddenly given a lot, they don’t know how or why to save. They spend uncontrollably, buying big homes and luxury vehicles, often unaware of the long-term cost of upkeep. Social media makes them a target for bad investments. They feel pressure to share with friends and family and often squander their winnings on parties, alcohol, and drugs. Some even commit suicide. We must wisely steward the money we currently have. Forget the wild dreams of winning the lottery or other types of gambling. Learn to be faithful with what you have now and trust God to multiply your efforts. Work hard, give, save, spend wisely, and invest prudently. Lay up treasures in heaven, not on earth.
