Crazy Money! Humble Man Gives $3.8 Million

It’s Crazy Money Day!

Hinsdale, New Hampshire was home to a reserved man who led a fairly quiet life. He served in the US Navy, earned a Master’s degree, and taught high school social studies and driver’s ed. He became production manager for Agway Corporation in the 1970s. When the company closed in the ‘80s, Geoffrey Holt invested his cash settlement. He sold his car and got around by bike or a riding lawn mower. He stayed busy by doing odd jobs around town and was groundskeeper for the mobile home park where he lived. He didn’t have a TV, a computer, or much furniture. He didn’t want much. When he died, he surprised his community with $3.8 million. No one knew ole frugal Holt was sitting on millions. He chose to live humbly and worked quietly with his hands. Hinsdale hopes to honor his frugality by using the money wisely.

It is rare to meet people who are content with the simple things of life. How about you? Are you grateful for what you have or do you always yearn for more? Frugality allows you to give, save, and invest so that you can help many people both now and in the future – like Geoffrey Holt. You can’t take possessions to heaven, but you can start accumulating treasures there now. Jesus said, “… store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)
