Christ – Our Source of Contentment

What would it take for you to be content?

Most of us have something we’re waiting for that we think will improve our contentment. What’s yours? A new car? A better job? A raise? A long vacation?  Or maybe becoming debt-free? Our financial condition can cause a lot of worry, stress, and discontentment. I do believe it’s important to work towards improving your financial well-being, but not at the expense of contentment. So let me explain. Paul addressed it in Philippians 4:11-13: Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me…”

Paul knew what it was like to lack, to taste the pain of not having enough, of suffering, of sacrificing, of delayed gratification, of dashed hopes, of painful sorrow, of what he calls “humble circumstances.” Yet he also experienced abundance. He knew what it meant to have comfort, to taste prosperity, to have all of his needs met. The point is that Paul found the secret to being content. Christ was the source of his contentment, not his circumstances. I hope you’ll make the same declaration today. Believe in your heart while listening to my voice. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, even right now.
