Crazy Money! Decorating Dorm Rooms

It’s Crazy Money Day!

Do you think college tuition is high? How about decorating dorm rooms? Now you can hire someone to transform a dreary room into a cozy home away from home. From custom curtains, monogrammed pillows, headboards, and bedding, to light fixtures, furniture, and even art, decorators make it happen. The New York Times reported that Eden Montgomery got her idea for decorating dorm rooms after her freshman year at Ole Miss. She graduated in 2021, and in 2024, hired 25 seasonal employees to assist 200 dorm clients. The cost? About $10,000 per room for services that include putting the room together on move-in day. It’s crazy, but she’s one smart lady!

The right ambiance and learning environment does affect the ability to study, but I wonder what kind of pressure this puts on other students. Years ago, I heard Cal Thomas give an illustration about a man who redecorated his hotel room. He knew his time there was temporary, but he liked surrounding himself with the luxuries of life. Cal went into great detail, then made a point I’ve never forgotten. We’re only here a few years. Don’t get distracted by the temporary and lose sight of the eternal. The Apostle Paul told Timothy, “godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.” (1 Timothy 6:6-7) All that we have here is temporary. So wisely steward what God provides by “setting your hearts on things above.” (Colossians 3:1) We’ll be there before we know it!

Focusing on the temporary will lead to credit card debt. Christian Credit Counselors will create a debt management plan that will dig you out of a hole. For more information visit online at crown.org/ccc.
