Make Giving Your Highest Financial Priority
Do you have financial goals for next year?
Are you preoccupied with holiday travel, shopping, and baking? Allow me to challenge you for just a moment. Given 3 financial priorities for the new year, which one would you pick? Would it be:
1. Saving more?
2. Paying off your debt?
3. Just trying to stay current on your bills?
Our attitude toward money and the things we prioritize reveal where our focus really lies. That’s why I suggest you make giving your top financial priority in the new year. I may sound like a broken record, but this priority is clearly stated in God’s Word. In Matthew 6, Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Start the new year with the goal of giving consistently. Also, plan to save $1,000 in an emergency savings account while paying down any consumer debt you have. Ideally, you should have 3 months of your living expenses to cover unforeseen circumstances.
Now if you’re among those just treading water, you may need to focus on increasing your income. Consider taking on a part-time job until you can get things stabilized. There are many work-from-home jobs to supplement your income. Remember, nothing is impossible with the Lord. Honor Him first with your giving and seek His help with the rest.
