Lights of the World

Jesus told us to be the light of the world…..but did you ever consider that the kind of light bulbs you buy may help you fulfill this mission?!

Well, when Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” in His Sermon on the Mount He obviously meant that we as Christians should be spiritual lights in contrast the darkness of our world. And a large part of living as spiritual lights is practicing faithful stewardship. Though stewardship applies to every area of our lives, when we steward our money wisely, it’s easier for everything else to fall into place as well.

And as silly as it sounds, making wise purchases, even light bulbs, is a great example of faithful stewardship.

My wife, Ann, was convinced that buying LED bulbs would save us money but I refused to believe her! As usual, she looked into it and was RIGHT.

Did you know that a household that has 20 light bulbs can save at least 1,000 dollars over a decade by using LED bulbs instead of halogen or incandescent bulbs? This is because of their long life and low energy usage.

In fact, it’s a win-win.

A light bulb is a seemingly small deal. But, in Luke 16:10 we’re told, “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much” And if we can apply $1000 over 10 years to paying off debt, increasing savings, or giving to the poor, then light bulbs become a big deal.

You may pay $1 to $2 more for each bulb, but ultimately save more in electrical costs and fewer bulbs over time.

Also, make sure to save your receipts and return any bulbs that don’t work or burn out quickly.

Shop wisely, and steward well to honor the true light of the world.
