Escape Vacations
by Chuck Bentley
You’ll often hear costly vacations referred to as “escapes,” but running away is never a good remedy for financial problems.
When people experience financial crises, they commonly react by getting away from it all. The logic is simple: Escape to an exotic place that will be remembered as a happy experience, even if you have to go deeper into debt to get there.
But burying your head in the sand won’t erase your financial problems. If you choose the “escape” option, the long-term result is that your financial problems are only going to become worse.
Indebtedness can destroy your relationship with your spouse. After all, you can’t have a good relationship when all you ever talk about are problems!
If you’re suffering from a financial crisis, stop overspending immediately and get on a budget. Adopt a frugal lifestyle and pay down your debt. This is a far better “escape” than a debt funded trip.
This won’t prevent you from taking a vacation. It simply means that the vacation you take can be paid for in cash, not with more debt.
