Maximizing Your Skills

Mention stewardship, and money will probably be the first thing that comes to most people’s minds. But we should be good stewards of everything entrusted to us, including God-given skills as well as money.

If a skill enables you to do something easily, you may take it for granted. Suppose you’re a “natural” at something and can perform, up to a point, with little effort. Because going beyond this point would require more effort, you may be tempted to remain where you are.

But as we look throughout history, we can see the benefits of skills that were developed into excellence. As a result, we have beautiful art and music, medical advancements, technological wonders, and an abundance of conveniences that enhance our lives today. All of these resulted from people who made good use of their skills.

Yet, even in our high-tech world, there is still plenty of room for innovation.  Regarding your children, make it a point not to limit your view of their skills. If you have children who can’t sing or play sports well, don’t be quick to conclude that they aren’t skilled.

Your children are “wired” for certain tasks. You can do them a great service by helping them recognize this and encourage the development of their talents. As a result, they could experience fulfillment in life and work that many people miss. God may use their skills to improve the lives of many others in the process.
