Fear and Wisdom
by Chuck Bentley
Wise decisions lead to blessings; foolish decisions lead to suffering. The cornerstone of wise decision-making is the fear of the Lord. Fools despise wisdom and discipline and turn to sources not of God.
The final hours of King Saul present us with one of the most striking examples of seeking wisdom from a source other than God. Worried about the outcome of an upcoming battle, Saul told his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire ofher” (1 Samuel 28:7 NIV).
Saul ended up dying in the battle “because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the LORD” (1 Chronicles 10:13-14 NIV).
If you fear the Lord, you won’t turn to sources other than Him. You’ll realize your desperate need for wisdom and recognize and honor Him as the primary source of wisdom.
Christianity is a living, dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ, the living Lord who gives us guidance through His thoughts and ways. We get into trouble when we don’t fear the Lord and seek wisdom from other sources.
