GIF Which Spirit?
“Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”
(Acts 20:28)
Which Spirit?
by Larry Burkett
I have a friend who is a missionary in South America. Several years ago, when he was visiting the U.S., one of the things he said struck me very forcefully. He went to church with us, and a Christian semi-rock group played and sang Christian lyrics to music with a rock beat. When we came out of that service, he said, “You know, in South America I spend my time getting those spirits out of the people that I’m ministering to, and here you are inviting them into your churches. I cannot believe this.”
He went on to say that the music, the beat, and the content of what we’re doing is very similar to the demonic content of what he sees in the people who believe in witchcraft. He spends his time and energy trying to get rid of those evil spirits, and then he comes to America and sees that we’ve brought them into the church.
Of course, he was just expressing his opinions, but it made an impression on me. What do you think? It’s up to every church to pray about and decide what is appropriate and what will honor God.
The psalmist wrote, “Sing for joy to God our strength; . . raise a song, strike the timbrel, the sweet sounding lyre. . . blow the trumpet” (Psalm 81:1-3).
