Authority Over Satan
by Larry Burkett
When Satan was cast out of Heaven, the only authority granted to him was the authority given by God: authority over this world.
We read in the book of John that Jesus said, “The thief [Satan] comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy” (John 10:10).
As Christians we have authority over Satan. James said in today’s verse that we are to “resist the devil and he will flee.”
The apostle Paul wrote, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness [Satan] in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm” (Ephesians 6:12-13).
When the devil tempted Jesus, he fought him off with the phrase, “It is written.” We can do the same thing. We can use God’s Word to raise hedges around us.
Jesus told the disciples, “He who believes in Me, the works that I do shall he do also. . . . And whatever you ask in My name, that will I do” (John 14:12-13).
It seems pretty clear to me that we have authority over Satan as long as we are living in the power of the Holy Spirit, following God’s Word, doing God’s will, and resisting him in Jesus name.
