Teaching Children About Lordship and Contentment

If your children never understand God’s lordship and never learn contentment, they stand a good chance of becoming self-focused consumers who buy first and worry about the consequences later.

You don’t want to see them value money before God or end up in financial bondage, so here’s some advice that you as a parent can use to help your children avoid these pitfalls.

Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it” (NIV). God is the owner of everything, and your children need to know that they are stewards, not owners, of things in this life.

When you make a wise financial decision, explain it to your children within the framework of being a good steward. Children need to learn that being more frugal or less materialistic is not the same as being a faithful steward.

In addition, Matthew 6:24 says that no one can serve two masters. You can’t love God and money. Teach your children who God is and why He should be Master of their lives instead of money.

Finally, Philippians 4:11-13 teaches that you must learn to be content in any circumstance and that your true strength comes from the Lord. If you are content, your children will hear you praise God for whatever blessings He gives you, and they will learn to do the same.
