What To Do With Anger
by Larry Burkett
There are different kinds of anger. The apostle Paul tells us that anger will bring the wrath of God and we should “put. . . aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth” (Colossians 3:8). He was referring to personal relationships.
In Ephesians Paul said, “Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on youranger, and do not give the devil an opportunity” (Ephesians 4:26-27). I believe he was saying that we should be careful not to give Satan room to work while we are angry.
However, I believe that not all anger is bad. When we see what’s happening to our country because of the filth in movies and television and through politicians who care more about their own personal security than they do this county, that makes me angry (maybe I should just call it righteous indignation!).
When I’m angry I do three things: I let some time pass, which allows me to think rationally; I confess my anger to God and ask Him to forgive me; and I ask God to help me be totally honest, kind, and polite, which has to happen supernaturally.
If you are harboring anger, you need to pray and ask God to forgive you and help you to forgive. Remember, part of the Lord’s prayer says, “Forgive us our debts, as we also haveforgiven our debtors” (Matthew 6:12).
