DAY 18
THE VALUE OF YOUR WORK
Is your work just a means to an end? For too many, work is a necessary evil. Others default to a different extreme, putting all their worth and value into their work, letting it define their identity.
Somehow Christians have been duped into believing that work is a secular activity and therefore they shouldn’t expect to feel spiritual about a job. But that attitude destroys our greatest area of outreach and witness!
Work is a daily opportunity for us to exercise our God-given gifts and put spiritual principles to practice.
It doesn’t matter if your work is in the home, on an assembly line, or in the corporate corner office. God has created you to work and doing so should honor Him.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (Colossians 3:23-24)
How you earn your money is just as important as how you spend your money. Because of the direct correlation between the two, it should make us pause and consider our purchasing decisions more seriously.
My freshman year of college I took a part-time job making minimum wage at a children’s shoe store. At some point during the school year, my parents came to visit. My dad asked when the last time I had gotten my car washed was, which meant he could tell what the answer was: it had been awhile.
We started talking and he made the point that I’d have to work a little over an hour at the shoe store in order to pay to get my car washed. That same $8 could be spent on gas, dinner out with friends, a movie ticket, etc.
There is monetary and spiritual value in every hour of work you put in, whether that’s at home, or in a career. That value should influence the way you choose to spend your money. If an item or experience isn’t worth x number of hours of work, then why buy it?
How many hours of work does a dinner out to eat cost you? Is that car payment worth all the meetings you’ll have to sit through this week? Or could you be using that money for something of eternal value?
Today's action item:
Today, take some time to reflect on your work. Ask the Lord if it's honoring to Him and consider ways to focus on worshipping at work in the week ahead.
