Choices in a Christian Business
by Larry Burkett
Being a Christian businessperson is not easy. Many choices that are highly acceptable in most business groups are expressly forbidden to anyone seeking to serve the Lord.
I was talking with the owner of a sizable importing company who boasted that he regularly paid customs officials to “expedite” his goods. When I asked if he thought it was wrong, his reply was “Only if I get caught.”
He professed to being a Christian but said he didn’t usually tell anyone because some of the things he had to do in business wouldn’t look good if people knew he was a Christian.
When I challenged him on his dual ethics, he said that God must approve because He was blessing the business. His sole basis for this analysis was the abundant profit he was making. Such an analysis could just as easily apply to the Mafia.
The purpose of any Christian, in business or otherwise, is to glorify God—not just to make a profit.
“By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples” (John 15:8).
