Couples and Risk
by Chuck Bentley
As an investor, you’ll have to deal with the issue of how much risk you can take. If you’re married, an equally important issue is how much risk your spouse can take. Chances are your opinions will be different.
Spouses have personality differences that cause them to approach matters in different ways. But differences can strengthen a marriage if they are accepted as beneficial to each other.
When husbands and wives are able to listen to each other and cooperate in meeting each other’s needs, the differing viewpoints of a husband-wife team contribute to a balanced life together. They learn how to complete, rather than compete.
If your investment strategy is worlds apart from that of your spouse, be willing to compromise and seek peace from the Lord. He will confirm your plans and unite your hearts.
However, if you’re unable to agree, seek competent outside help from a financial adviser who has the experience you lack.
When selecting an adviser, be sure that he or she is a committed Christian. As Psalm 1:1-2 says, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law hemeditates day and night” (NIV).
