Hearing God’s Voice
by Larry Burkett
In my travels as a lecturer, I’ve known many people who told me that God speaks audibly to them. I wish that were true in my life. I have never heard God speak to me audibly; but I know I will when I stand before Him one day.
In order to hear God speak in your spirit, you have to be in tune to God. It’s kind of like turning on a radio to get your favorite program on FM 95. You aren’t going to hear that program if your radio is tuned to AM 750.
Of course, being tuned to God’s voice is not that simple, but I think it’s a good analogy. Until your mind, your spirit, and your heart are tuned to God, you won’t hear Him speak to you. (Sin will block your “reception.”)
I believe I’ve heard God speak in my spirit and, almost without exception, He has spoken to me through His Word—through Scripture. He may speak to a particular situation or problem I’m facing, but I always hear Him speak inaudibly and with spiritual clarity.
If we want to be in tune with God and hear what He has to say to us, we have to be “tuned in” to His voice and receptive to His Word.
“He who is of God hears the words of God” (John 8:47).
