How Much Is a Tithe?
by Larry Burkett
This is a difficult question to answer quantitatively. The word tithe in Hebrew literally means “tenth.” In Hebrews 7 the tithe is used to describe Abraham’s relationship to Christ by drawing a parallel between the tithe and the acknowledgment of authority.
I believe the tithe was meant to be individualized. It was never intended that everyone should give the same amount; each should give according to abundance and conviction. The tenth that we are so familiar with was considered the minimum. You are in no way limited to giving only a tenth.
Anyone unable to make a commitment of a tenth of his or her resources to God should realistically examine all spending and living habits.
The thing to remember is that whatever you give probably is an indicator of your personal relationship with the Lord.
God’s Word says to “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this. . . if I will not open for you the windows of heaven, and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows” (Malachi 3:10).
