Making the Most of Your Work

Because you spend a large part of your time at work, it’s important to find contentment in this aspect of your life. If you’re miserable in your current job or if you’re looking for a new job, here are some tips to help you deal with job-related conflict and transition.
- Adam was created to work before he disobeyed God, so recognize that you are working for God, not man.
- All of your skills, talents, and even your promotions come from God, so trust Him to be in charge of your career. “But it is God who judges: He brings one down, he exalts another” (Psalm 75:7 NIV).
- Work as if God were your boss, because He is. “Whatever your hand finds to do, to it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom” (Ecclesiastes 9:10 NIV).
- Honor your employer even if you don’t like or agree with him or her. Some of the greatest spiritual leaders in the Bible served corrupt, immoral masters.
- Develop a strength-training program. Work conflict and transition will cause a lot of stress, so get into a program that includes exercise, eating right, and getting plenty of sleep and rest.
- Don’t jump at the first job that becomes available. Take the job that is the closest match with how God wired you.
- Never focus solely on the money. Focus on doing the task and being a great servant on the job.
- Consider whether or not you’re current on the latest trends in your field of work. Next, determine what knowledge you have that could help your company become a leader. Then, work to increase your excellence and value by becoming a continual learner in your field.
