Our Security
by Larry Burkett
As we fight against the rampant materialism in our society, the serious danger our world is in becomes more obvious to me daily.
The goal of our lives, according to society, is to be rich or at least to live like we are. Without a doubt, even the poor in our country would not be considered impoverished when compared to most Third World countries.
And yet, in the U.S. there are children who are going to bed hungry tonight. I believe that the materialism and monetary poverty in this country are just symptoms of a great problem: emotional and spiritual poverty.
As a culture, because we are searching for significance and security in our lives, we put a high value on having things, on making lots of money, and on getting all we can.
As Christians, our significance comes from being the children of God – equals with Jesus, the Son of God! In John 17:21 Jesus prayed, “That they may all be one; even as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be in Us; that the world may believe.”
As His children, God wants us to serve Him by loving those around us and by revealing His nature to them by the way we live our lives.
Our security comes from knowing that God loves with an unlimited love – not from our income or the amount of money we have in the bank. Our significance comes from being His children.
Thank You, God, for being my loving Father.
