Poor in Spirit
by Larry Burkett

When I think about the poor in spirit I think of the contrast between the humble and the haughty.

Jesus was not talking about the physically poor but those who were humble. Since He said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” then He probably would have said, “Cursed are the haughty in spirit.”

In fact, He did say that. He told us in His Word that to the extent you exalt yourself in this lifetime you will be humbled for all of eternity.

If we humble ourselves in true service to God, it will include being a servant in the true sense of the word, not just to Him but to those around us.

I think the perfect example of being poor in spirit (humble) is when Jesus washed the disciples’ feet.

Our humility can be shown in taking a less prominent position at church but giving it all we’ve got. It means being willing to sit back and let someone else take the credit for what we’ve done without being resentful.

I appreciate the verse in Proverbs that says, “Before honor comes humility” (Proverbs 15:33).
