Should I Have Fear?
by Larry Burkett
Fear has a very useful function. If you didn’t have fear, you’d be roadkill. I have a friend who has no fear of physical peril, and it’s a real detriment to him. In his lifetime, he’s probably had 200 broken bones and is a terror to be around.
He goes hang gliding in the Alps, jumps off buildings, scuba dives in underwater caves, jumps motorcycles for fun – crazy things.
We are supposed to fear some things. However, there are some people who live in dread and fear, and that’s wrong too. They let fear control their lives.
There should be a healthy balance for fear in your life. You should have a cautious regard for your own safety but not enough to let it control your life.
The writer of Hebrews says, “Since we, God’s children, are human beings. . . he became flesh and blood too. . . . Only in that way could he deliver those who through fear of death have been living all their lives as slaves to constant dread” (Hebrews 2:14-15 TLB).
