The Right Motive for Being Financially Free

You can make great financial decisions in life, but unless your motives are aligned with God’s purposes, those decisions have no eternal value.

For example, getting out of debt is biblical. But if your motive for getting out of debt is to be your own master or to live at a higher standard than your neighbors, recognize that this is pride.

Your motive for getting out of debt should be centered on God, not yourself. The Bible says that you are to have only one Master. You are never to claim that you have no Master, even when you are debt free and have sufficient money to do whatever you dream of doing.

Your motivation for getting out of debt should be to become free from your false Master, the Lender, and become a slave only to Christ. This will allow Him total freedom to use you according to His will.

True stewardship is ordering your life in such a way that God can freely spend you, not so that you can freely spend whatever you want. That motive will enable you to resist pride and be used for eternal purposes.
