Treat Employees Fairly
by Chuck Bentley
I once asked Larry Burkett for his best advice for leading a ministry. I remember he did not even hesitate one second as he looked me in the eye and said, “Treat all people the same. Don’t consider one better than the other. That approach has served me well whether in business or ministry.” Larry was a true example of one who believed and practiced this principle.
Sometimes, people in authority are quick to criticize but slow to reward the work of their subordinates. Often, they are simply too busy to notice the achievements of the people they supervise. This will never pay long-term dividends on any level.
Negative consequences result from supervisors who look down on lower-strata workers. That attitude will be transmitted and received, and a barrier will be built between the two sides.
Instead, those in authority need to recognize that all people are important, regardless of income or education. If they find that they can’t give the same honor and regard to all ranks within their business, they need to examine their heart and resolve the issue in a meaningful demonstration of respect.
When it comes to dealing with subordinates, there’s no room for ego, because there is no self-made businessperson. Only God’s blessing, and the combined efforts of a great many people, make anyone a success.
