Crazy Money! Antonio Brown Blew Millions

It’s Crazy Money Day!

It’s easy to lose track of where we spend money, but this story is truly heartbreaking. Antonio Brown, a former Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver, filed for bankruptcy last year. With assets worth $50,000 or less, he supposedly owed his creditors nearly $3 million. He had multi-million career earnings plus endorsements. Brown says, “I think I made $100 million, if you count off the field and everything…I spent all of it. I blew all my money. I blew everything.”

Sports writer Tyler Webb estimates that Brown probably retired with $50 million in 2021. However, multiple lawsuits, lawyer fees, and unwise financial decisions cost him dearly. Antonio Brown was one of the most dominant receivers in NFL history during the time he played for the Steelers, but his life on and off the field was full of arrests and allegations. Perhaps you know people like him.

We can learn many valuable lessons from studying the mistakes of others and honestly looking at our own. As believers, we can revisit our failures without fear or shame, because: “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) The Bible gives positive and negative examples of how people handled money. To reap the eternal dividends God promises the faithful, we must avoid conforming to the pattern of this world. We must be transformed by the renewing of our minds. So there’s still hope for Antonio Brown.
