Crazy Money! Challenged to Give More

It’s Crazy Money Day!

Cody Hobelmann wanted a high-paying career. He hated pre-med studies but discovered he could make money in business. His biology and chemistry grades prevented him from getting into business school. However, an economics degree didn’t require an application. Plus, he could still graduate in 4 years. Cody wasn’t interested in economics, just making money and lots of it! He became a financial planner and saved as much as he could in retirement accounts.

When challenged to tithe off of his income, he realized generosity was a distant goal. However, tithing was not a financial decision like his retirement contribution. It was an obedience decision. So he started with 10%. Initially painful, in just two months he realized it didn’t hurt as much as he thought it would. He married Stephanie who was very generous. She wanted to support other causes, while Cody believed tithing was enough. He held onto the belief that giving 10% was good, but even better when earning a lot of money. His wife and brother his mindset.

Cody learned that God provided the money for him to manage. As a manager of other people’s money, he already knew the responsibility that came with that role. That’s when his perspective on giving changed. He was transformed from a guy wanting more, more, more, to living on less so he could give more, more, more. It didn’t make sense, but he wanted to obey God. It wasn’t about the dollars he earned as much as the impact of where the money went.
