Crazy Money! Egg Theft

It’s Crazy Money Day!

In 2011, 6 million pounds of maple syrup were stolen in Canada. It was valued at $18 million, and it was one of the largest food thefts in history. In 2013, a Nutella heist occurred in Germany. On February 1st, thieves stole 100,000 organic eggs from a warehouse in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. They were taken from the back of a distribution trailer and were valued at more than $40,000. That’s crazy!

It’s not unusual to hear about food being stolen in other parts of the world, but this incident reveals the volatility of our own food system. A bird flu outbreak has caused the price of eggs to soar more than 50% over the last year. Farmers have culled millions of hens to stop the spread of the disease. In February, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that over 13 million hens were lost or slaughtered just since December. Egg supplies have diminished, and prices are up – way up! Homes and restaurants are affected. Waffle House imposed a 50-cent surcharge per egg. No wonder people are interested in raising backyard chickens. If you’re considering it, weigh the initial costs. A coop and necessary equipment can be expensive, and it may take several years to justify your investment. You’ll need to see if your community will allow you to raise them and what permits are necessary. Support local farmers or find good substitutes until the prices come down. Until then, be grateful for every egg!
