Crazy Money! Financial Scandal

It’s Crazy Money Day!

A Vietnamese woman was sentenced to death for crimes going back to 2011. She embezzled $12.5 billion. That’s 3% of Vietnam’s GDP! That’s crazy! Damages to Saigon Commercial Bank are estimated at $27 billion. She was accused of giving the largest-ever bribe recorded in Vietnam: $5.2 million to a state official. Several of her family members and former bank executives were also issued prison sentences. The severity of her punishment, as reported in Business Insider, reflects the country’s ongoing and high-profile campaign against corruption led by the Communist Party.

I’ve traveled to many beautiful places in the world that have been devastated by corruption. Like cancer, its miserable effects are difficult to contain. God placed us in this world to reveal Himself in and through us. Our usefulness to God is directly proportional to our honesty. We should never allow ourselves to be trapped in anything that’s unethical, immoral, or dishonest, no matter how inviting it seems. To be effective ambassadors, we have to resolve to live by God’s standards of absolute honesty. At times, it may result in personal loss or persecution, but our greatest potential loss involves much more than money. If we aren’t honest with something as trivial as money, we won’t be entrusted with something far greater. Jesus said, “…if you’ve not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches.” (Luke 16:11)
