How To Update Your Resume

Are you updating your resume?

It’s important to periodically update your resume. Find a template that highlights the gifts God’s given you, then use these tips: First, focus on your skills. Proverbs 22:29 observes that someone skilled in their work will serve before kings; they won’t serve before officials of low rank. Highlight your abilities and what you can offer a company. Detail projects you’ve led at work, church, or as a volunteer. Think through what you want to do in your day and how that would benefit an employer.

Second, choose good references. Proverbs 27:2 warns that someone else should praise you, not your own mouth; an outsider, not your own lips. Christians are taught to avoid praising ourselves, but to let others do it. You can impress an employer by carefully choosing your references. Including a letter from one of them can do that for you, especially coming from someone connected to the business you’re interested in.

Third, show your service to others. 1 Peter 4:10 tells us to use whatever gift we’ve received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace. Our lives should revolve around helping people. A resume including service demonstrates that you’re a team player, concerned about the needs of others. So, make others a part of your story.

Finally, be completely honest and never lie. Avoid the temptation to stretch the truth when detailing your skills, plans, and dreams. Now, put your hope in the Lord and ask Him to open the doors with your resume!
