Investing in Your Children – Part 1
Where are you most heavily invested?
The intentional investment of time and money varies among families. One friend told me that buying a boat when his children were young was “the best money he ever wasted.” It created lifelong memories that his family still cherishes. Another friend purchased fixer-upper cars that he and the boys worked to restore on the weekends. They were the basis for lessons in stewardship and then given to the boys when they reached driving age. He told me, “This investment in old cars kept my boys off the streets, off of drugs, and close to our family. It was worth every penny I ever spent on one, even if we lost money on the car.”
Enjoying activities together will positively influence your children. Many require no outlay of money. Others require equipment that you may want to rent or borrow before deciding to fully invest. Serve others by involving your children. Whether through your church, your neighborhood, or elsewhere, this investment of time can be memorable if you make it fun. Make cards, shop, and deliver items for those in need of love. Plan secret drop-offs. Don’t neglect the widows, poor, or lonely. A simple meal or a bouquet of flowers can brighten their day. Then explain why and demonstrate how you financially support your church and other non-profits. Encourage them to do likewise so they’ll develop the habit while young. Generously investing time and money into your family’s life will bless each member. Make it a priority.
