Testimony Tuesday – Treat Everybody the Same

Do you treat everyone the same?

Larry Burkett, Crown’s late founder, was one of the smartest, most humble men I’ve ever known. I traveled with him to his last public event where he spoke from a wheelchair. We talked deeply on that 3 ½ hour road trip – covering a variety of topics. I recall asking him, “Larry, what do you think has been the most important lesson you’ve learned in your many years of ministry?” I expected him to think about it awhile, but his mind was still razor-sharp. Almost instantly, he looked me in the eye and said, “Treat everybody the same. We’re just His servants. Rich or poor alike, everyone needs the Lord.” Those words and his example have never left me. They’re important to remember at home and wherever we work or serve.

Jesus Himself, although King of the Universe, treated everyone the same regardless of their position or status, and He taught us never to show favoritism. In Matthew 7:12 Jesus said, “…in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” Then throughout Romans 12, the Apostle Paul gave similar advice: “Don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you… Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves… Share with the Lord’s people who are in need… Don’t be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. And don’t be conceited.” God’s Word and Larry’s example motivate me to love the rich and poor alike.
