True Success
How do you define success?
One of the greatest mistakes we can make is defining success by what we do apart from the Lord. Far too often, we take credit for our accomplishments. Yet no one is independent of God. We may impress a few people or dazzle some crowds with our accomplishments, but in light of eternity, we’re all helplessly dependent on God. Our thinking is tainted by humanism – the view that we’re on our own – the master of our own fate. For example, we’ve heard that “God helps those who help themselves!” We must work and do our part, yet no one is ever self-made or independent of others. Jesus said, “If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
It’s a lie to think our success is determined by our own efforts. Think of Nehemiah. He had the task of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, but he knew he couldn’t accomplish it alone. So, he cried out to God for help. Nehemiah 6 records that they finished the wall in just 52 days. It says: “When our enemies and the surrounding nations heard about it, they were frightened and humiliated. They realized this work had been done with the help of our God…” This should be our heart attitude in all that we do. Apply this to your work today, tomorrow, and the rest of your life. It will ease your burden and increase your joy! Success will be found in glorifying God for what He does through you not for what you do apart from Him.
